Spring Break 2019 at Honeybee Centre

Spring break programs are intended for children to attend with an adult.  The suggested age is 5+, however we recognize that parents know their children best.  Younger children are welcome, but may require more support from their adult.  Please email questions to cassie@honeybeecentre.com

Honeybee Centre has offered fun, exciting and interactive presentations for over 15 years! We are a staple in the community and continue to grow and expand to offer new and fresh programming for all ages!

Honeybee Centre has a fun and interactive Honeybee Classroom and educational program. Our program includes education about bees, beekeeping, pollination & environmental stewardship, interactive activities to accompany each lesson, a take-home, bee-friendly, wildflower seedling craft and candle rolling included in our Spring Break Bee Class!

Objectives:

To bring the amazing world of the honeybees to the forefront of education through hands on activities and explorations.

To showcase the relationship between humans and honeybees.

To feature the honeybee as an integral species in our food web.

To explore the honeybee and other pollinators as a keystone species in Earth's ecosystem.


Our program will educate on four main topics:

All About Bees Pollination

Extraction/Beekeeping Civic Duty

Using interactive ‘stations’, guest have a chance to learn, explore and experience the lessons using all of their sense!

Guest will:

Taste different types of honey

Touch displays

See the lesson come alive in the form of real beekeeping props, interactive displays and colourful posters

Listen to lessons not only from our guide but also to the reactions and observations from their peers while interacting with different educational activities!

Smell other bee products like bee pollen, beeswax and propolis

Mason Bee Workshop

Costs:

$5.25+tax per person – cost will be taken off any in store purchases on the day of the workshop


Mason bees are fantastic early season pollinators and are easy for any gardeners to take care of. Genevieve Olive talks about various stages of mason bee pollinating, the relationship between bees and plant, where and when to set up your own mason bee homes, and how to start your cocoons.

A follow up course offered in the Fall will help you clean out and store your mason bees until next spring!

Costs:

Come build a mason bee house with your family or friends.

All supplies are provided to build and decorate a wooden house that you can fill with nesting materials.

Registrants receive a 10% discount in store if they wish to purchase straws or cocoons.

Junior Beekeeper

Costs:

$12+tax per person

Everyone, age 6 and up, are welcome on our family-friendly program.  

Learn about the intriguing world of honey bees in a way that few get to experience: through the hands-on exploration of an active, living beehive! Your tour will include suiting up in protective gear, lighting a bee smoker, and getting up close with more than 40,000 bees.  Each tour is capped at 15 people, providing you an intimate experience of this fascinating species.

You will walk away with a better understanding of the importance of honey bees and why their survival is so important, and see firsthand why bees aren’t near as scary as many of us think! Watch honey bees at work creating honey, witness as new bees are ‘born’, and learn more about what you can do to help the health and survival of this vital species.  Tours include a taste of honey fresh from the hive.
